Le noir et l’orange

Post for Color Combo Challenge – Orange and Black.

The two-color motif reminded me of a masterpiece of French literature – Le rouge et le noir (The Red and the Black) by Stendhal (1830), which is about Julien Sorel’s attempt to rise above his plebeian birth through talent, hard work, deception and hypocrisy.

Were I to write a novel called Le noir et l’orange, I might also call the hero Julien Sorel. The black would be the misery he’s born into, while the orange would be the rising sun (bright future, awakening) he’s striving for.
